The History of ESVOT

1986 - 1987

The Foundation

The ESVOT was established in December 1986 by Jean-François Bardet at the World Congress of the WSAVA in Paris. Inspired by the vitality of the American Veterinary Orthopaedic Society (AVOS), he invited colleagues from several European countries who shared a profound interest in orthopaedics and traumatology in both small and large animals to establish a European sister society.

He was supported in this endeavour by Saki Paatsama and Dieter Prieur.

The first ESVOT congress took place in Frankfurt in 1987, alongside the inaugural European meeting of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

The first Board: Saki Paatsama (President), Jean-François Bardet (Vice-President), Dieter Prieur (Secretary) and Uli (Ulrike) Matis (Treasurer). Antoine de Moor joined the extended Board to lead the large animal programme.

1988 - 1994

The Itinerant Years and the Crisis

In its early years, ESVOT held its congresses alongside major national veterinary events: These were held in Milan (1988), Nice (1989), Uppsala (1990), Amsterdam and Utrecht (1991), Rome (1992), and Birmingham (1994). While this approach enabled the society to reach colleagues in each country, it also deprived it of a distinct identity.

In the early 1990s, the rise of European specialisation in the form of European colleges weakened the society, with attendance stagnating and initial enthusiasm dwindling. Following the Rome congress in 1992, the Board recognised that the future of ESVOT was at stake.

1994 - 1995

The Paris Turning Point: A Founding Decision

The founders and board members then met in Paris in 1994 for a two-day strategic evaluation meeting. They asked themselves a blunt question: is there a sound basis in Europe for the existence of ESVOT? The answer was yes, but on one condition: the society had to establish its own identity, separate from the colleges of specialisation and national congresses.

The decision, recorded in the minutes by JF Bardet, could be summarised in a single sentence: to hold a meeting and social programme in an attractive, easily accessible city in Central Europe with university lab facilities every other year.

1994 - 1995

1996 - 2009

The Munich Era and Global Reach

Munich was chosen as the host city. With the support of Uli Matis and her team, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University became home to the society's congresses.

The 8th Congress (1996) marked a true rebirth: 'A new spirit was born'. This success was confirmed at the 9th Congress (1998), which saw over 220 registrations, as well as three to four simultaneous seminars, wet labs and short courses organised the day before the congress, not to mention a successful commercial exhibition.

Between 1996 and 2009, seven main congresses, as well as seven workshops and wet labs, were held in Munich. Membership grew from 200 in 1996 to almost 500 in 2008, with members hailing from 33 countries spanning all continents.

Jean-François Bardet served as President of ESVOT from 1991 to 1998 during the challenging early years. Newsletter 1/99 pays tribute to the wisdom and enthusiasm with which he led the society: despite tremendous pressure and, at times, adversity, he showed great strength of character and resilience and remained firmly committed to the society's goals. He was succeeded by Uli Matis, after which the presidency changed every two years. A full list of all ESVOT presidents and board members can be found in Appendix 1.

In 2002, Munich hosted the first World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress (WVOC), organised jointly by ESVOT and the VOS under the presidency of Herman Hazewinkel — an idea proposed by Geoff Sumner-Smith. The society's great strengths include the strong ties with American colleagues who have enriched the congresses.

2010 - 2026

Move to Italy, Varying Venues and Formats

In 2010, the headquarters relocated from Munich to Cremona. The veterinary school was no longer suitable due to refurbishments, and the growing number of participants meant there was a greater demand for a variety of conference venues, including professional conference centres and parallel events. Thanks to Aldo Vezzoni's tireless efforts, the logistics were brought under the umbrella of EMOVA, a branch of SCIVAC. Aldo not only served as President (2006–2008) and Past President (2008–2010), but was also a mainstay of ESVOT for 20 years (1996–2006 and 2012–2022) in his role as Secretary.

In November 2010, ESVOT celebrated its 24th anniversary at the 3rd WVOC in Bologna, home to the world's oldest university. Until then, the conference programme had also included topics relating to horses. However, as these accounted for only a small proportion of the programme compared to the small animal sessions, and equine specialists also preferred events covering soft-tissue surgery, it was decided that ESVOT would only offer small animal topics in future.

Since the Munich congresses, ESVOT programmes have combined continuing education (thematic lectures and wet labs) with professional exchange at the cutting edge of orthopaedics and traumatology.

Since 1998, landmark courses (dry labs and wet labs) have been organised as pre-conference events.

In response to demand for practical courses, the ESVOT Board decided to organise a series of such courses in years when the biennial congress was not taking place (see Appendix 2).

In 2004, alongside the pre-congress practical courses, ESVOT organised a seminar on total hip replacement. Due to the enthusiastic response to this seminar, further seminars on specific topics were organised in subsequent years when the congress was not held, providing an opportunity for participants from the various practical courses to meet together.

In view of the high demand from conference participants, the Board decided in 2022 to organise a conference every year rather than every two years. The new format consists of a main conference held across multiple rooms, which is then followed by a single-theme conference the following year.

For the first time, all lectures at the September 2026 congress will be recorded live and made available on demand. This new feature has been introduced in response to feedback from participants who have expressed concern about missing valuable content when several interesting lectures take place simultaneously. With these recordings, participants will be able to revisit lectures they are unable to attend live, enabling them to make the most of the full conference programme.

In 2026, the 25th ESVOT Congress will take place in Rome, coinciding with the 7th World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress to celebrate the association's 40th anniversary. Over the past 40 years, the selfless commitment of many colleagues has enabled the establishment of a scientifically oriented professional association that has become a benchmark in veterinary orthopaedics and traumatology in Europe. Thanks to global support from outstanding speakers, it also enjoys a reputation beyond European borders. Ad multos annos!

2010 - 2026

Honours
